What ingredients does store bought taco seasoning contain?
Looking at the ingredients list for store bought taco seasoning, it’s not shocking that there are extra filler ingredients. The actual spices included in the package are not even listed on the ingredients list! This is a bit shocking to me. I like to know what’s in my food, which is why I stick to homemade options whenever possible. And the bonus is that you know exactly what is in it, and you’ll get a more flavorful taco seasoning because of that! No extra filler, no cornstarch, no canola oil.
Ingredients in Homemade Taco Seasoning Blend
Ground Cumin
Ground cumin is an herb that has a warm and sweet flavor. It is often used as a savory alternative to cinnamon. Cumin comes from a cumin plant that is a member of the parsley family.
Sea salt
Sea salt is different from table salt in that it is made from evaporated sea salt water. It is minimally processed and differs in taste as well as texture from table salt. Sea salt is said to have a more complex flavor due to trace minerals found in sea salt. Substitute table salt if you like.
White Sugar
Sugar can mask any bitterness or sourness that may otherwise be found in savory cooking. While the amount in this recipe is minimal, it is understandable that one would like to eliminate it or substitute for brown sugar.
Ground Black Pepper
Ground black pepper helps to increase the absorption of essential nutrients. It provides a touch of spice, as well as notes of citrus and pine.
Smoked Paprika
Smoked paprika adds a smokey flavoring. It does not add to the overall spice.
Garlic Powder
Garlic powder has a more subtle flavor than fresh garlic. It will add a background garlic taste that doesn’t overpower the other flavors. Garlic powder contains vitamin B, calcium and iron.
Onion Powder
Onion Powder adds a sharp and zesty flavor. Its potency falls in the middle of a raw onion and cooked onion.
Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
Crushed red pepper flakes provide a medium spice level that is also slightly citric. The overall heat of the taco spice blend can be modified by increasing or reducing the amount of crushed red pepper flakes.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper is considered a medium-hot pepper. This is another place that the overall heat of the taco spice blend can be modified. Cayenne pepper is often found in chili powder blends as only one ingredient.
Dried Oregano
Dried oregano is another warming spice that adds an earthy flavoring to this taco seasoning blend.
